Matcha… Latte?

Barista presented girl with her order of a Matcha Latte, but she rejected it (nicely) as she realized that it consisted of coffee… and she couldn’t take coffee.

My First Thought: OMG THEIR MATCHA LATTE ACTUALLY HAS COFFEE??

Sister’s Reaction: “Matcha Latte”, which means it has coffee right?

My Reaction:
Nooo, most cafes that serve Matcha Latte don’t have coffee in it. If I’d known their Matcha Latte had coffee I would’ve ordered it omggg.

SO. THAT SPARKED QUESTIONS OF. WHAT IS A MATCHA LATTE TO MOST PEOPLE?? WHAT IS “LATTE” REALLY??

Caffè Latte, is Italian for Milk Coffee. As the Americans began to commercialize it, “Caffè Latte” was often shortened to “Latte” in most English-spoken countries outside of Italy, such as in Singapore.

Italian                 English
Caffè                    Coffee
Latte                     Milk
Caffè Latte       Coffee with Milk

So if you order a Latte in Italy, all you’ll get is a cup of milk.

Which brings us to… Matcha Latte. An ingenious and diverse creation. Yum.

From my mini survey (ThANK YOU MY 16 RESPONDERS <3), there was a 50-50 ratio of those who perceived Matcha Latte to consist of coffee, to those who did not.

After the little Italian lesson, we now know that Matcha Latte comprises green tea with milk eyyy? However, drinks are ultimately still an art form, and art shouldn’t be confined.

But ah wells, I love both teas and coffees, so I’d never be disgruntled if served a cup of Matcha Latte that has coffee :>

Thank you very matcha for reading this latte post!
